What Is Hypnotherapy? How Hypnosis and the RRM Work
Hypnosis is often misunderstood. Television and stage performances may make it look as though someone loses control, falls asleep, or becomes unaware of what is happening.
The actual experience is usually much quieter.
Hypnosis is a state of focused attention in which outside distractions become less important and your inner experience becomes easier to notice. You remain aware, can communicate, and can choose whether a suggestion feels appropriate to you.
Hypnotherapy uses this focused state intentionally to explore and change the subconscious patterns that influence thoughts, emotions, habits, and automatic reactions.
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a natural state of focused absorption. You may experience something similar when you become immersed in a book, drive a familiar route, meditate deeply, or hover between waking and sleeping.
During hypnosis, your attention turns inward. Your body may feel deeply relaxed while your mind remains alert and responsive.
You are not unconscious, and the hypnotherapist does not take control of your mind. You can hear what is being said, answer questions, move your body, and stop the process if you choose.
The purpose is not to overpower the conscious mind. It is to help its usual analysis and mental activity become quieter so you can observe subconscious associations more clearly.
WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?
Hypnotherapy is the intentional use of hypnosis to support a specific personal goal.
A hypnotherapist may use focused relaxation, imagery, questions, emotional exploration, or carefully chosen suggestions. The techniques depend on the client, the goal, and the hypnotherapist’s training.
Some approaches focus primarily on reinforcing a desired behavior or response. Others explore the emotional associations and earlier experiences connected to a present-day pattern.
Hypnotherapy is not psychotherapy or medical care, and it should not be treated as a replacement for either. It is an educational and self-improvement process that helps people work with their own internal resources.
You can learn more about my specific approach on the Trauma-Release Hypnotherapy page.
WHAT DOES THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND HAVE TO DO WITH IT?
Your conscious mind handles deliberate thought, reasoning, planning, and decision-making. Your subconscious mind influences the responses that happen more automatically.
These may include:
Emotional reactions that arise before you can explain them.
Habits you repeat despite intending to change.
Beliefs about what is safe, acceptable, or possible.
Expectations formed through earlier relationships and experiences.
Protective responses such as overthinking, perfectionism, silence, or over-functioning.
Many subconscious patterns began as adaptations. They may have helped you preserve connection, anticipate conflict, avoid criticism, or manage an environment you could not control.
The difficulty comes when an earlier strategy continues operating in circumstances where it is no longer needed.
Hypnotherapy creates an opportunity to notice these associations and work with them more directly.
WHAT IS TRAUMA-RELEASE HYPNOTHERAPY?
Trauma-Release Hypnotherapy is the approach I use to help clients explore the emotional origins of persistent patterns.
The word “trauma” does not refer only to a single catastrophic event. A pattern may also develop through repeated criticism, emotional inconsistency, unmet needs, family expectations, or experiences that taught you to disconnect from part of yourself.
During hypnosis, we follow the emotional response beneath the present-day pattern. The goal is not to force a memory, prove that a particular event occurred, or have you endlessly relive the past.
The goal is to understand the meaning your subconscious attached to an experience and release the emotional association that keeps influencing your current responses.
WHAT IS THE REGRESSIVE RELEASE METHOD?
The Regressive Release Method, or RRM, is my signature three-session Trauma-Release Hypnotherapy process.
Instead of working only with the most recent example of a problem, we look for the pattern connecting your present reactions to earlier experiences and subconscious conclusions.
For example, a woman who continually says yes when she wants to say no may consciously understand boundaries. Beneath the behavior, however, her subconscious may associate disagreement with rejection or withdrawal.
Someone who overthinks every decision may not simply need better organizational tools. Her mind may have learned that anticipating every possible outcome reduces the risk of criticism or failure.
RRM helps us explore what the pattern is trying to accomplish, where that emotional association began, and what your adult self understands now that your younger self could not have known then.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING RRM?
Every person’s experience is different, but the process is collaborative throughout. You remain aware, able to communicate, and actively involved in each session.
Session 1: Learn Self-Hypnosis
In the first session, you learn how to enter and use self-hypnosis. We practice the technique together, and you visualize yourself experiencing the goal or change you want to create.
You receive a recording so you can continue using the technique independently.
Session 2: Address the Root Pattern
The second session is the longer, deeper hypnotherapy experience. We follow the presenting issue to its subconscious origin and work with the emotional response connected to it.
The purpose is not to prove that a particular memory is historically accurate or to force you to relive the past. We focus on the emotional meaning of what arises and the pattern it may still be influencing.
Session 3: Integrate and Continue Independently
During the third session, we address anything that has naturally surfaced since Session 2. This may include additional hypnotherapy when more of the pattern needs attention.
You also learn how to continue using self-hypnosis for yourself so that you leave the process with a technique you understand and can use independently.
RRM is a complete three-session process designed to help you understand and release the subconscious pattern that brought you to the work.
WHERE DOES EMPOWERMENT COACHING FIT?
After completing RRM, some clients choose Empowerment Coaching to begin building from the internal space created through their hypnotherapy work.
RRM focuses on identifying and releasing the old emotional pattern. Empowerment Coaching focuses on how you want to think, feel, choose, respond, and live moving forward.
The first Empowerment Coaching session can include creating your Personal Reality Script.
WHAT IS A PERSONAL REALITY SCRIPT?
A Personal Reality Script is a personalized vision of the life and internal experience you want to create after completing RRM.
It is not a generic collection of affirmations. We develop it from your goals, values, language, and the insight gained through your RRM process.
The script may include:
How you want to relate to yourself.
How you want to respond when an old pattern appears.
The boundaries and choices you want to strengthen.
The emotional qualities you want to experience more consistently.
What your desired change looks like in daily life.
Your Personal Reality Script becomes a self-hypnosis resource that supports the future-building phase of your work.
RRM releases what was driving the old reality.
The Personal Reality Script defines the new direction.
Empowerment Coaching helps you begin living it.
WHAT CAN HYPNOTHERAPY SUPPORT?
People seek hypnotherapy for many personal-development goals, including:
Understanding recurring emotional reactions.
Changing unwanted habits or automatic responses.
Strengthening confidence and self-trust.
Working with people-pleasing or perfectionism.
Reducing the mental pressure connected to overthinking.
Becoming more comfortable expressing needs and boundaries.
Creating a different relationship with motivation and follow-through.
No responsible practitioner should promise a particular outcome. Results vary because every person, history, goal, and level of participation is different.
Hypnotherapy is also not appropriate for every concern or every individual. Questions about medical or mental health treatment should be discussed with an appropriately licensed healthcare professional.
WILL I LOSE CONTROL DURING HYPNOSIS?
No. Hypnosis does not remove your judgment, values, or ability to make choices.
You remain an active participant. You can accept, question, or reject suggestions. You can speak throughout the process, and successful hypnotherapy depends upon communication and collaboration.
The hypnotherapist guides the process. You do the internal work.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO LEARN MORE
Understanding hypnosis is different from experiencing a process designed around your own pattern.
If you recognize that insight alone has not changed a reaction that continues to repeat, a complimentary consultation gives us an opportunity to discuss what you are experiencing, answer your questions, and determine whether RRM is an appropriate next step.
